Things I Can’t Control as a Yorkshire Wedding Photographer (and Why That’s Okay!)

Writer's picture: sophiewaghornejsophiewaghornej

As a Yorkshire wedding photographer, I’ve had the joy of capturing love stories across the beautiful landscapes of Yorkshire and South Yorkshire. Every wedding is unique, and while I pour my heart into every shot, there are always elements beyond my control. Understanding these factors can help couples embrace the unexpected and focus on what truly matters - celebrating love and telling your love story no matter what.

In this blog, I’ll share the things I can’t control as a wedding photographer and how I professionally navigate them to ensure your special day is beautifully documented.

1. The Great British Weather

Yorkshire is known for its breathtaking countryside and charming venues, but it’s no secret that British weather can be unpredictable. From sudden showers to overcast skies, the weather can change in an instant.

When it comes to adapting, I always scout indoor and outdoor photo locations to have backup plans ready. But I will always embrace the unique atmosphere that rain or clouds can bring. Rainy days offer soft, romantic lighting and opportunities for creative shots with umbrellas or cosy indoor moments. Whether it’s sunshine or showers, your wedding photos will reflect the joyful vibes of your day.

  1. Lighting Conditions

Natural light is a photographer’s best friend, but it’s not always consistent. Dimly lit venues or harsh midday sun can be challenging.

Even when the light isn’t perfect, don't worry! Your images will be still be beautiful. No matter the lighting, I ensure all those important moments are captured with clarity and emotion.

3. Unpredictable Schedules

Weddings rarely run exactly on time. Speeches may run over, or the first dance might be delayed. These moments are part of the natural flow of the day.

I create flexible photography timelines that allow for shifts in the schedule and I focus on capturing candid moments so nothing feels rushed or forced. Your day should unfold naturally, and I’m there to document every genuine moment without pressure.

4. Guest Behaviour

Every wedding guest brings their own energy, and sometimes this can lead to unexpected situations—guests stepping into shots or becoming camera-shy.

I work discreetly to capture authentic interactions without intruding (LOVE a candid). When it comes to group shots, it's all done in relaxed manner to make sure they feel comfortable. I focus on storytelling, blending prompted poses and spontaneous moments so your wedding gallery is filled with natural, joyful images of your loved ones.

6. Timing of Golden Hour

Golden hour—the period just after sunrise or before sunset—is ideal for soft, glowing portraits. But wedding timelines don’t always align with this magical light.

When possible, I will include some extra time in your timeline to head out and capture that golden glow!
