An Autumn Wedding at The Venue Bowers Mill
In September 2025 I had the joy of photographing Stevie & Josh's alternative wedding day at The Venue Bowers Mill and what a day this was! Autumn was just beginning and this suited their rust and dark colour palette perfectly as well as complementing the industrial style of The Venue - dreamy. Their quirky wedding cake made by Stevie's mother will live in my head rent free, it was simply unique to Stevie & Josh and I just love it so much (scroll for photos). The Venue Bowers Mill: A Dream for Autumn Weddings
There's something about an autumn wedding at The Venue that just works - the industrial setting mixed with the colours and softer light of an autumnal day are a perfect combination. Not to forget the adjoining apartments that create a stunning bridal prep area for the morning of your wedding day.
The ceremony room is a great space to say 'I do' with its exposed brick walls, wooden floor and the original mill windows. I also found this space perfect for family and group photos if the weather isn't on your side! Unfortunately Stevie & Josh did have a wet wedding day but it really doesn't matter when you can bring your photos inside. I always recommend my couples discuss an indoor space option with their venue just in case we have a downpour - this is the UK remember...
The Details: Rust Orange, Alternative & Very Much Them
The colour palette was everything - rich, warm and autumnal. The rust-orange bridesmaids’ dresses set the tone for the day, complemented by dried, rustic florals and the gorgeous autumn foliage surrounding Bowers Mill. Then came the details that made it completely their own. Leopard Cherries Design created the stationery and table plan, while Emily K Weddings brought the styling together with a dark, moody feel. And the table names? Very much on brand - music-themed, with nods to the likes of Korn and Motley Crue because obviously a wedding like this needed a little rock ’n’ roll thrown into the mix. 🤘🏻
Getting Ready: The Calm Before the Chaos
The nerves, the anticipation, the preparations - complete with a glass of fizz in hand. Stevie and her girls got ready in the Bowers Mill apartments and the vibe was relatively chill! Some tunes in the background, snacks on hand and the prosecco flowing. It was lovely to spend some time with the ladies and quietly capture these moments.
The Ceremony
The ceremony was short, sweet and full of all the important bits - no faffing around, just the two of them, their favourite people and a whole lot of love. There were plenty of happy tears, a few big smiles and, before we knew it, they were officially married and ready to get stuck into the celebrations.
Confetti, Cocktails & Couple Photos
We managed to get outside for a drizzly confetti photo but personally, I think the weather suited this wedding day perfectly well. Then back inside for a drinks reception - the cocktails and canapés were flowing.
We waited for a gap in the rain before heading to The Venue's outdoor space for couples photos. Stevie & Josh had already expressed to me at their pre-wedding photoshoot that they hate having their photo taken (how many times do I hear that?!) so we kept things relaxed, natural and most importantly, short. I gave them a bit of direction when they needed it, let them have a laugh, and then got them straight back to their guests. And honestly? They absolutely smashed it - you’d never know they’d been dreading it!
The Kind of Wedding Photography I Live For
This wedding is exactly the kind of day I bloody love photographing. Couples who aren’t interested in following the traditional wedding rulebook, who want to do things their own way and fill their day with things that actually feel like them. From the dark, autumnal styling and rock 'n' roll details to two people who were absolutely dreading having their photos taken, this wedding had personality running through every part of it.
For me, it’s never really about creating the 'perfect' photo. It’s about capturing the atmosphere of the day - the big emotions, the ridiculous moments, the people you love, the little details and all the stuff that happens in between. I’ll give you some direction when you need it, but I’m not going to treat your wedding day like a photoshoot. I’d much rather you were off drinking, laughing with your mates and actually enjoying your wedding while I quietly document it as it unfolds.
And I think that’s what made this day so special. It was completely, unapologetically Stevie & Josh and that’s exactly what I want your wedding photographs to feel like too.
Wedding Photography at The Venue Bowers Mill
How much time should you allow for photos?
I like to allow 30-45 minutes for group photos and 30 minutes for your couple photos usually during your drinks reception. We might not need all of this time but it's good to have a planned in and if we get done earlier, great, you're back to the party.
What happens if it rains?
No need to panic - we move inside. The Venue has plenty of indoor space we can use and once the chairs are cleared from the ceremony room, this becomes the perfect open space to use for your group photos. Also, the rain doesn't put me off - I say let's grab a brolly and head outside for 10 minutes for your couple photos. The atmosphere the rain creates can be so beautiful.
Where are the best places for couple portraits?
The Venue Bowers Mill has a few options - their outside courtyard is super pretty and even more so in an evening when the fairy lights come on. There's also an old, industrial lift inside which allows for some cool couples portraits.
Is Bowers Mill good for documentary wedding photography?
100%. The open spaces around the whole of the venue mean I can move around freely without getting noticed too much. This is especially perfect for your speeches where I can circulate the room and capture lots of different people's reactions from all the different angles!
